Two Backdoor volunteers recently completed their degrees at Midwestern State University.  Congratulations and best wishes to
Ashley Kleiber (bachelor's degree in business administration) and Jamie Keeter (bachelor's degree in education).

Congratulations to Backdoor volunteers Ariana Cerreta and Emily Eby, who have both been named National Merit Semifinalists for the 2009-2010 school year.  Only students scoring in the upper 1% among the 1.6 million who take the test become semifinalists.

Several Backdoor volunteers were named to the Texas Music Educators Association All-Region Choir on Nov. 21.  Congratulations to Emily Clements, Payton Beggs, Phillip Eby and Zack Brasfield.  After auditions involving hundreds of students, only 16 students in each section qualify.

Larry Sharp planned a surprise vow renewal ceremony at the Valentin Imperial Maya Resort in Mexico where he and Jeri were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary.  To top it off, he flew Adam and Oliver in from Minneapolis to share in the celebration.  The ceremony was beautiful!  Adam suggested doing this again every year!

Ken Lambert (affectionately known as Kenny to those who remember him from SYM in the 1980's) is all grown up and practicing law in Dallas.  He's also a member of the Vocal Majority and, in his spare time, uses that old Backdoor Training in the Dallas Bar Association's annual Bar None fundraiser.  Follow this YouTube link and you'll see Ken doing his best Michael Jackson impersonation in a "Thriller" parody and then channeling Paul Simon in a lawyer's version of "Homeward Bound".

rushHeadshot.jpgSydney Rush, a sophomore at Bowie High School, has been awarded a Spectrum Scholarship by Midwestern State University.  Sydney was awarded this scholarship based upon her SAT scores, records of academic excellence, and recommendations from the school counselor, her PAP English teacher, Ms. Baker, and her AP Chemistry teacher, Mr. Brown. A total of 85 students applied to the 2009 program, and 34 were extended invitations.
Spectrum is an elite four and one-half week scholarship program for academically talented high school students, with the scholarship providing for tuition and fees for 6-8 hours of university courses taken during the Summer I term at MSU. High-achieving Spectrum students automatically qualify for post-high school scholarships at MSU through the Spectrum Scholars program.  If Sydney maintains a 4.0 GPA for the two classes, she qualifies for a $2500 scholarship while a 3.5-3.9 GPA qualifies her for a $2000 scholarship at Midwestern. Scholarships may be renewed for up to three additional years for students who meet yearly GPA and credit hour standards.
As a Spectrum Scholar, Sydney will be taking Survey of American Literature 2623 and Pre-1865 American History alongside regularly enrolled university students.  While taking university-level classes for college credit, Sydney also will be receiving dual credit for high school history and American literature.
Sydney is the daughter of Bob and Versel Rush of Bowie.

Cinderella and Prince Charming weren’t the only ones who found their happily-ever-after Friday night at Backdoor Theatre.
So did Backdoor Theatre alumna Kendra Martin and her fiancé, Joshua Lakey.
Lakey proposed to Martin on the downtown community theater’s main stage just before the Second Act of the theater’s production of Rodger and Hammerstein’s musical version of “Cinderella.”
There's a video of the event on YouTube:

Gail Fuller nominated for Jefferson Award

Gail Fuller, a volunteer at Backdoor Theatre, answers the phones, makes reservations, coordinates volunteers for every performance, oversees season-ticket sales and renewals, chairs the New Play Committee, procures props and costumes for each performance and has even gotten into character a few times.“Without the contributions of Gail Fuller,” the nomination form reads, “the show would not go on at Backdoor Theatre. Not only would there be no props or costumes, there would be no ushers, box office attendants or tickets.” She’s served at Backdoor for 30 years, giving up to 160 hours a month without earning a dime.

Can anyone name all four of these kids, and the show they were in?

The Cartwrights: John is still a stay at home dad.  Aaron turned 3 on 2/16, and Zach was 8 months old on 2/5.  Here they are for your enjoyment:

Georganne Payne passed her CFRE exam in Midland TX recently, on her first attempt. This is not done often. She is the fourth CFRE to accomplish this in the Permian basin (which is 22 counties). There are about 4500 in the entire world. Georganne currently works for MD Anderson in Houston, TX,  and sometimes advises the board at Backdoor Theatre about fundraising skills.

Now that summer is over, Bryan Tuck has started updating his blog. Enjoy the read! Bryan's Blog site: www.xanga.com/nexus6bt

From Bryan:
I graduated from Chapman with an MFA in Film Production/Editing in May and moved up into Los Angeles, where I hoped to find some employment in the industry I've been spending the last three years (officially, anyway) preparing to enter.  A script supervisor position on a series of three independent short films in June/July proved to be my first professional film work, and after that, I had some interviews, including one for a PA position on Robert Zemeckis's upcoming adaptation of
A Christmas Carol, and another for a pilot for Lifetime.  After that, I wound up as a vault assistant at Modern VideoFilm, a post-production facility in Burbank.

It was not what I was hoping for, but it was income and the hours were agreeable.  While working there, I was contacted by a fellow Chapman 2008 graduate about an editing gig for O Entertainment, the company behind the various "Thumb" movies (Thumb Wars, Thumbtanic).  They were producing a short called Thumb Debate '08, spoofing the presidential elections, and I ended up being a co-editor on the project.

A couple of weeks later, I was contacted about an asssistant editor position on a new animated series that O's sister company Omation was producing.  On December 1st, I began at Omation as assistant editor on Planet Sheen, a spinoff of Jimmy Neutron, which should begin airing on Nickelodeon in late 2009.

Our very own webmaster is enjoying writing success!
William Payne's play Wee Care  was the 2005 winner of the McLaren Comedy Playwriting Competition at Midland Community Theatre in the full length division! It received a full production in September 2006, with sold out houses and two hold-over weekends. It brought in triple the budgeted ticket sales, and broke a record for the length of the waiting list to get in. Later that same year, the show was produced at Backdoor theatre in December, and then in the summer of 2007 it was produced at the Garza theatre in Post, TX. In 2009, it will be produced at the C.A.T.S theatre in Lubbock.

DavMelissa.JPG What are David J. & Melissa N. Wallis doing?

William will be turning four years old this year, and is growing like a weed. His newest obsession is watching "The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and he will be Raphael for Halloween this year. Melissa continues to work at HKS, Inc. and is currently working on several different projects. David is currently working for the Best Buy Services Warehouse in Flower Mound and even serves as Artistic Director for Lakeside Community Theatre. He is working on his next project, directing Lakeside Community Theatre's next production "Murder at 1440Kw: A Fatal Freqency." For more information on the show, you can visit http://www.lctthecolony.org/
