Design + Tech/Crew Positions and Responsibilities
Design & Tech/Crew will work alongside Backdoor Theatre staff to design, build, and create the world of the show! Whether it’s painting sets, making props, or putting together the perfect costume, there’s a place for you!
Designers - All designers will work under supervision and guidance of Director Cassie Toft and other Backdoor staff. They will be responsible for the design of the area they are selected for and will assist in the build with other youths assigned to the crew.
Technical Crews - Tech crews, unless otherwise stated, will typically work during the weekdays, between allotted times between 10 AM - 5 PM, beginning in June. They will be responsible for the build of the production. Work days will be scheduled depending on availability of youths assigned to crews.
Some positions can be combined, so if you’re interested in more than one area, let us know on the form below! You can gain experience in different aspects of theatre production.

- Assistant Stage Manager (ASM) - The ASM will attend all rehearsals and performances. They will work closely with the Stage Manager, Riley Crabtree, to ensure the smooth run of rehearsals and performances.
- Set/Painting - Youth assigned to this crew will be responsible for the set build, as well as painting the set.
- Props - Youths assigned to this crew will be responsible for pulling, building, and searching for items to be purchased for props.
- Backstage Running Crew - Youths assigned to the backstage running crew will be required to attend most rehearsals, especially when we begin running the full show, and all performances. They will assist with any set changes needed and prop assistance.
- Lights - Youth assigned to the lighting crew will be responsible for assisting with focusing and hanging lights or creating special effects for the production.
- Light Board Operator - The LBO will be required to attend some rehearsals, all of tech week, and all performances. They are responsible for running the lights during performances.
- Sound Board Operator - The SBO will be required to attend some rehearsals, all of tech week, and all performances. They are responsible for running the music and sound during performances.
- Mic Board Operator - The Mic Op. will be required to attend some rehearsals, all of tech week, and all performances. They are responsible for running the mics during performances.
- Makeup/Hair - Youth assigned to this crew will be responsible for assisting with makeup and hair, including wigs, during the production.
- Costumes - Youth assigned to the costume crew will be responsible for building, pulling, or shopping for costumes for the show.
- Costume Running Crew - Youth assigned to the costume running crew will be responsible for assisting with any costume changes that take place during performances. They will also be responsible for check in and out of all costumes and laundry after performances.
