What is Summer Youth Musical (SYM)?
Did you know that SYM is why Backdoor Theatre resides at 501 Indiana?
Summer Youth Musical was its own program that started in the late 1960s. They performed at Notre Dame and Rider auditoriums and were looking for a permanent home.
In 1975, the Wichita Falls Backdoor Players were looking for a new home. Mr. Erle White owned the ice house at 501 Indiana Ave. He donated it to the Wichita Falls Backdoor Players as long as they promised to be the home of Summer Youth Musical! Backdoor Theatre opened in April 1976 with the first SYM on the Main Stage that same year!
At Backdoor Theatre, we believe in nurturing young talent and fostering a love for the performing arts. That's why we're thrilled to invite current 6th - 12th Graders to join us for our annual Summer Youth Musical!
Each summer, this talented group of young performers comes together to rehearse, learn, and create magic on stage under the guidance of our Youth Education Team through a fully realized production. From auditions to performances, SYM-ers will have the opportunity to develop their skills, build confidence, and forge lifelong friendships in a supportive, safe, and inclusive environment.
Whether your child is a seasoned performer or taking their first steps onto the stage, our Summer Youth Musical offers something for everyone - on stage or off! With a diverse selection of musical productions, ranging from beloved classics to contemporary favorites, there's always a role waiting to be discovered!
