The Vagina Monologues

What's it about?

An Obie Award-winning whirlwind tour of a forbidden zone, THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices,  which explores  several other topics through the eyes of women with various ages, races, sexualities, and other differences. 

​This groundbreaking play gives voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, and thoroughly human stories, transforming the question mark hovering over the female anatomy into a permanent victory sign. Witty and irreverent, compassionate and wise, this piece gives voice to some of humankind's deepest fantasies, fears, angers, and pleasures, and calls for a world where all are safe, equal, free, and alive in their bodies.

Auditions

Sunday, January 21st at 3 PM on Backdoor's Dinner Stage

Auditions and crew positions are open to those 18 +, all backgrounds, and those who identify as women (cisgender, transgender, fluid/non-binary identities, etc).

No experience necessary! On the audition form, you will be able to select which monologues you feel most comfortable reading for auditions and performances. Read more below! 

Casting/Monologues

 ​You can read the monologues by clicking here. Cast members will be assigned a monologue from the show. The cast have one read-through, up to two one-on-one rehearsals with the Director, two nights of tech, and two performance nights.

As a staged reading, the cast will be seated on the Dinner Stage and have binders with their scripts in hand during performances. ​
Monologues
Hair - Any Age
  • The title says it all
The Flood - Ages 60 & up
  • Women in her 70’s tells the tale of her closing off herself to the world
The Vagina Workshop - Any Age
  • English Accent (Preferred, but not required)
  • Woman attends, you guessed it, a Vagina Workshop, & discovers herself
Because He Liked To Look At It - Any Age
  • Woman realizes the beauty of herself through watching her lover discover her
My Vagina Was My Village - BIPOC Role, Any Age
  • Muslim woman tells about her life in her village during the war
  • Topic of rape is included in monologue
My Angry Vagina - Any Age
  • Again, the title says it all​​
The Little Coochi Snorcher That Could - BIPOC Role,
​Any Age
  • Southern Accent (Preferred, but not required) 
  • Woman of color speaks about her journey from a young girl into womanhood 
  • Topic of rape is included in monologue
  • Child & Adult relationship topic included

Reclaiming Cunt - Any Age
  • Must be comfortable shouting cunt, a lot.
  • Requires encouraging the audience to shout it too!
The Woman Who Loved To Make Vaginas Happy - Any Age
  • Lawyer turned sex worker 
  • Must be comfortable performing moans mentioned in the monologue
I Was There In The Room - Ages 40 & up
Poetic monologue about witnessing birth 

Other Possible Roles
“Narrator” - Reads introductions & questions the women answer
6 Year Old Girl - Age 18-25
